Ring Lardner

(Niles, Michigan) Ringgold Wilmer “Ring” Lardner was born in Niles, but he wrote his way to a long obituary in The New York Times when he died on September 25, 1933 in East Hampton, New York of a heart ailment at the age of 48.  The Ring Lardner Middle School in Niles serves 580 students in grades seven and eight and was named in honor of the native son who “in the 1920s was one of America’s best-known journalists and writers.”  I write all this about the author of You Know Me Al and the close friend of F. Scott Fitzgerald, because we always make a point of walking past the home in which he lived on Bond Street whenever we are in Niles.  And what better day in which to do that than on Natalie’s birthday on February 8, 2013.
