(Elkhart, Indiana) Having attended the second Elkhart Jazz Festival in 1988 and many since, I was open to Natalie’s suggestion yesterday morning that we clear the calendar and head on over for the 29th Annual Elkhart Jazz Festival.  We had originally planned to spend the day at the Festival with our friend and fellow jazz aficionado Gary McCormick, but when Gary said he had to cancel due to family affairs, we decided to sleep in and mope around all Saturday. But then Natalie said: “Nope. We’re goin’ to the Festival.  This is the one day of the year that I am an official jazz fan, and I’m not going to miss it.”  So we went, and we are so glad we did, because we filled Saturday afternoon with the music of the following: Alfonso Ponticelli & Swing Gitan, David Greer’s Classic Jazz Stompers, the amazing Elizabeth Mis and her amplified sax, the Dave Bennett Quartet, the French Quarter, and a tribute to the late Indiana Jazz Master Wes Montgomery by Dave Stryker, Pat Bianchi and David Hilliker.  All that a some parting songs by Blair Clark in the Civic Plaza, and we are still buzzing Sunday morning.  Here are some photographic highlights from the 29th Annual Elkhart Jazz Festival to encourage you to attend the 30th Annual Elkhart Jazz Festival in June 2017:

Driven to make a mark in the male-dominated contemporary jazz scene, Elizabeth Mis has become one of the shining stars of the genre.

If you think of Dave Bennett as just a premiere clarinetist, then you need to see him pay musical tribute to one of his heroes: Jerry Lee Lewis.

The French Quarter was back by popular demand with Chris French on woodwinds. I want to play clarinet like that when I grow up.
