At home with nature in Michigan since June 27, 1987.

(Harbert, Michigan) When we moved full-time to Michigan from Chicago on June 27, 1987, friends told us that we would be back in the Windy City within six months. They were certain that a pair of dazzling urbanites like us would not be able to weather the lack of crowds and congestion and the 24/7 exposure to great natural beauty and rustic rural charms.  Not to mention the dearth of arts and entertainment.  They were certain we’d come a runnin’ back to the wonders of Carl Sandburg’s City of Big Shoulders, desperate for diversity and craving a good over-crowded festival or two. But we defied their expectations. Six months came and went as we settled into our quiet new lives in Berrien County, Michigan. We rode from Three Oaks to Traverse City our first August in Michigan, and we have played and prayed and obeyed and worked and shirked ourselves into a state of contentment here in our sylvan section of the Great Lakes State. We have given our blood (eleven gallons in my case), sweat, and tears to our adopted State of Michigan, and we love it here where we have lived and loved since June 27, 1987.  We didn’t move back to Chicago in six months or six years or sixteen years or twenty-six years, and we don’t expect to leave in thirty-six years.  We made the right move, and we’re as happily at home in the 800-square-foot cottage we call the Dunery as we were on June 27, 1987 when we picked up and left our native Chicago for a laid-back life on the Other Side.

It’s a little piece of heaven you have there!

  3. I went to Traverse City for the first time a few weeks ago and fell in love! I’m starting to think I wouldn’t mind a big change in pace and Michigan residency, myself!
